FAQs

Have a question?

Here are the answers to the questions we're most often asked.

If you want to know something that isn’t included in our FAQs, you can use our enquiry form.

Please also read our terms and conditions before booking.

  • Do I need to book in advance?

We recommend booking in advance if you can, especially for the City of Caves. If you’re not able to pre-book, don’t worry. We will do our best to accommodate you. If you’re looking to visit both the National Justice Museum and the City of Caves, we recommend visiting the caves first and we can advise on availability for the museum that day.

All educational and group visits must be pre-booked.

  • Can I change my booking to another date, or cancel my tickets?

All bookings are non-refundable. In the case of any member(s) of your group being unable to make it on the day please contact us as soon as possible. We will offer to exchange the admission to another date or give you a gift voucher valid for 1 year. Please see our terms and conditions for more information.

  • Where can I park?

There is no parking on site.

There are many park and ride sites around Nottingham, and if you choose to use the tram, you can receive 10% off your entrance to the National Justice Museum with a valid tram ticket for that day. The National Justice Museum is a short walk from the Lace Market tram stop, or the Broadmarsh Bus Station.

There is a large multi-storey car park in nearby Stoney Street. The Lace Market car park is also less than five minutes walking distance from the museum. Other options can be found on Nottingham City Council website.

  • Do you offer foreign language guides?

We do not offer foreign language guidebooks at this time.

  • What should I expect?

Daytime visits to the museum are family friendly, although very young children may find parts of the building unnerving. You have freedom to choose which exhibition spaces you visit. Some parts of the prison areas are dimly lit in places, but there is still enough light to see where you are going. Our actors are fully trained to ensure they deliver the correct experience for their target audience. We offer activities which are suitable for all ages including a range of family-friendly interactives. Our sensory map gives guidance for finding areas that tend to be quieter and less crowded, spaces that have seating, and others with tactile engagement and activities.

We have friendly staff dressed in historical clothing throughout the museum, ask at reception for performance times.

  • What ID do I need for a student ticket?

If you are in full-time education, any form of student ID will be accepted in order to purchase a discounted admission ticket.

  • How can I book a personal assistant/carer ticket?

A carer or personal assistant is free of charge when accompanying a paying visitor. Please bring ID with you, such as your PIP letter or staff ID if visiting with an organisation. Please contact us directly on 0115 952 0555 or email info@nationaljusticemuseum.org.uk. We will be happy to discuss your needs and book tickets for you.

  • Is the Museum suitable for children?

We offer activities which are suitable for all ages including a range of family-friendly interactives. Some very young children may find parts of the building unnerving. If you are unsure, please call us on 0115 952 0555 or email info@nationaljusticemuseum.org.uk and we will be happy to advise.

  • Are you open on Bank Holidays?

We are open daily, except for, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

  • Can you store luggage?

We have no secure way of storing large luggage, and while we do our best to accommodate requests, all items are left at your own risk. We would recommend finding alternative luggage storage.

  • What time is the trial performance?

We have a live re-enactment of a historic court case in our Victorian Criminal Courtroom every day, followed by a live re-enactment of a public execution in our gaol’s historic exercise yard. On weekdays, the timings of these can differ, so we recommend asking at reception when you arrive to make sure you don’t miss out. Over the weekends and school holidays, these are usually at the same time – 11:15am, 1:15pm, and 3:15pm for court cases and 12:15pm, 2:15pm, and 4.15pm for the public execution. Our team on reception will confirm the timings when you arrive.

  • Are you dog friendly?

We welcome accredited assistance dogs only.

  • Do I need to book the activities i.e. trial/hanging?

The re-enactments of court cases and the public execution are part of your museum admission ticket and do not need to be pre-booked. Please ask at reception for that day’s timings on arrival.

  • Can I take photos and videos?

You are welcome to take photographs in the National Justice Museum and City of Caves. However, we ask that you please do not film our historical re-enactments or costumed characters. This can be distracting for our actors, so we ask you to please put the camera down and enjoy the interactive performance! Please be mindful of other visitors when taking photos.

  • Are there lots of steps?

Our Museum is spread across five floors, with stairs down to each level, and a lift to most areas. Our building is Grade II* listed and while we make as many efforts as possible to make it accessible, there are certain areas that are only accessible by stairs. If you need any further information, please contact us on info@nationaljusticemuseum.org.uk or call us on 0115 952 0555.

  • Do you offer guided tours for groups?

Discounts are available for group bookings and guided tours are available to book at an additional cost. If you need any further information, and to book group tickets, please contact us on info@nationaljusticemuseum.org.uk or call us on 0115 952 0555.

  • I've seen a different price or offer on another website. Is it correct?

While we make every effort to keep external listings updated, we are not responsible for the accuracy of information on third-party websites. We always recommend checking our website for the correct information.

  • I am interested in hiring, filming, or exploring the Royal Courts of Justice. Can you help?

Please note, that although we lead some learning sessions at the Royal Courts of Justice, we are not able to help with hiring, press, or archive requests at the RCJ and you will need to contact them directly.
