KS3: COURTROOM WORKSHOPS
LOCATION: NORTH WEST
The Courtroom Workshop is a 2 hour interactive session, visiting the moot courtroom at the Manchester Metropolitan University, which provides an important opportunity for pupils to engage with local higher education institutions and to start thinking about future career choice.
Our workshops bring the law to life through hands-on, authentic and unforgettable learning experiences. In the Moot Courtroom, students will explore a contemporary case. With the help of MMU Law students they will create, prepare and present a trial, taking on the courtroom roles, to reach a verdict and debate the outcome.
Students will:
- Identify the different roles in a courtroom.
- Understand the skills and responsibilities that a Judge must possess in their day to day role
- Share their arguments in reaching the verdict and sentencing decision
Contemporary Themes:
Hate Crime – The 19 year old defendant is accused of posting grossly offensive and racist material on her Instagram account
County Lines – The defendant is 16 years old and charged with the possession and intent to supply a Class A drug. His defence will state that he was coerced and had threats of violence made towards him. Whilst the Prosecution will try to prove that the defendant was motivated by greed.
Knife Crime – The defendant has been charged with wounding with intent to cause serious injury and having an offensive weapon. Is there enough evidence for the defendant to be found guilty?
